Simon & Schuster Canada to Publish Tima Kurdi’s memoir, The Boy on the Beach

Toronto, February 15, 2017—Simon & Schuster Canada is proud to announce the publication of Tima Kurdi’s memoir, The Boy on the Beach: A Syrian Family’s Story of Love, Loss, and Hope During the Global Refugee Crisis, which will be released in Spring 2018. Vice President, Editorial Director, Nita Pronovost and Editor, Brendan May acquired Canadian rights from Martha Webb at The McDermid Agency.

A photograph of a tiny boy became the global emblem for the desperate plight of millions of Syrian refugees. Alan Kurdi’s body washed up on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea on September 2, 2015, and overnight, the political became personal, inspiring both grassroots activism and far-reaching policy changes around the world. The Boy on the Beach by Tima Kurdi, Alan’s aunt, is the remarkably intimate story behind that photograph—of the many extraordinary, death-defying journeys the Kurdis have taken, spanning countries and continents.

Tima Kurdi first saw the shocking photo of her nephew in her home in Vancouver, Canada. But Tima did not need a photo to understand the reality of the refugee crisis—she had already been living it. Tima emigrated from Syria at the age of twenty-two, but much of her family remained in Damascus. They became caught in the crosshairs of civil war and the ruthless chokehold of ISIS, and faced few other choices than to risk everything and flee their homeland. After the picture of Alan went viral, Tima stepped into the media spotlight to voice her grief and her outrage, encouraging citizens around the globe to open their hearts and their doors to refugees.

Tima says, “On behalf of the Kurdi family, we are grateful to Nita, Brendan, and Simon & Schuster Canada for their interest in our story, and for helping me put my voice out there to be heard. I hope this book will inspire people and bring all of us together, making us stronger, with love, compassion and hope for a brighter future.”

From the jasmine-scented neighbourhoods of Damascus before the war to the streets of Aleppo during it, to the refugee camps of Europe and the leafy suburbs of Vancouver, The Boy on the Beach is one family’s story of love, loss, and the persistent search for safe harbour in a devastating time of war.
